O'Neil joined O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 while the singer was still in high school. Judges loved her voice and she advanced to the Top 100 round. O'Neil received high praise by the judges. However, she experienced significant losses in the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated to the lowest 3 and 2 spots in both cases. Judges were amazed at her performance and suggested viewers choose contestants who sang well like Melissa. O'Neil was never in the top 3 after an impressive string of performances. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil was able to advance to the top two spots in the finals of the competition, Werner said that in the morning, papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie as she became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil was contacted by Canadian the Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on winning Canadian Idol immediately.
